The assignment

Milo’s office set has one rule: nothing goes on the expense report. Every object is already in a desk drawer, every trick can be handed out for inspection, and the whole thing ends before anyone’s calendar reminder goes off. He is a fictional character and has never filed an expense report, which may explain the rule.

Read the room

The break room, the end of a meeting once the agenda is done, or the five minutes before a call starts. Never during somebody else’s presentation.

The first two tricks work for a small group standing around you, as long as they see the back of your hand during the rubber band. The magnetic pencil does not: anyone beside you sees the finger. If people are standing at your elbows, close on the jumping band and keep the pencil for a one-on-one.

Pull the paper clips away from faces and screens. They really do jump.

If something goes wrong

If the clips come off unlinked, one clip was holding three layers; check it and pull faster. If the rubber band drags instead of jumping, your fingertips were not all inside the loop, or the band is too tight. Office bands vary a lot, so try the move with yours before the meeting.

For a lighter finish with colleagues, do the pencil, then turn around and show them the finger. It is the double ending from the guide, and it gets the bigger laugh.
