The assignment
Milo has one rule for this set: the food is the finale. If the plates arrive halfway through the salt shaker, the salt shaker loses. Every trick here is short enough to abandon gracefully, and each one hands its leftover prop to the next: the coin from the pen gag becomes the coin you vanish, and that coin becomes the decoy for the shaker. He is a fictional character, so the bill is not his either.
Read the room
Sit with your audience across from you. Nobody should be sitting beside you for the closer, and the pen behind your right ear needs your audience to your front-left.
Check the shaker before you start. Plastic or metal only, never glass. Many restaurants use glass shakers; if yours does, close on the coin vanish and keep the shaker for another night.
When the server comes to the table, stop. They are working, they have a tray, and they do not want to be the decoy.
If something goes wrong
If someone spots the pen early, it is the joke arriving ahead of schedule; laugh and go straight to the coin vanish. If the paper napkin collapses as the shaker leaves, it was not pressed tightly enough; mould it longer next time. Afterwards, put the salt back, straighten the napkins, and return the pen. It is a restaurant, not your rehearsal room.
